Your electric and gas bill is a breakdown of the charges you accumulated with your provider. It arrives monthly and is supposed to provide you with a better understanding of your energy usage. It will explain how much you owe and provide payment options. But when was the last time you thoroughly read your utility bill?
It sounds simple enough, but a utility bill is actually made up of several different components. Here is a breakdown of an average natural gas and electric bill, respectively:
This makes up about 4% of your gas bill and 5% of your electricity bill. It includes meter installation and gas shortage costs.
This subsidizes the government's environmental initiatives. These costs comprise about 6% of your gas bill and 11% of your electricity bill.
You don't pay full VAT fees on electricity, but you pay some. Currently, VAT payments are capped at 5% of your total bill.
Transmission networks are what actually deliver electricity and gas to your home or business. Some of the costs of building and maintaining these networks are passed on to the customer. About 2% of your gas bill and 4% of your electric bill make up these costs.
16% of your gas and electric bill goes toward distribution costs. These are the expenses associated with building and maintaining local gas pipes and power lines.
Not surprisingly, the bulk of your bill is comprised of the charges you accumulated with normal gas and electricity use. This is a wholesale cost, which means this is what your supplier had to pay. This also includes the supply costs, which reflect the general administration fees associated with running a retail business.
